As a consequence people who dislike Kamigawa truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Konda’s existential catchphrase 'Why would I consider penance for my actions when I have so many subjects willing to do it for me?', which itself is a cryptic reference to Nobunaga's letter to Akechi Mitsuhide in 1582. The fans understand this stuff they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these flavor texts, to realise that they’re not just lore-rich- they're deeply researched references to HISTORICAL JAPAN. There’s also Takeshi Konda’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Sengoku-period literature, for instance.

The Shinto themes are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of ya-o-yorozu no kami most of the flavor text will go over a typical player’s head. To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Kamigawa. I'm hopeful they will return, but it needs to be handled delicately on a flavor perspective as well as a power-level perspective. Also, Kamigawa's story took place like 10 thousand years ago compared to the current storyline, so it's entirely possible that if they returned, they could do a major shift in the mythology and explain the change as being due to the time difference. That said, they have gotten much, much better at taking iconic tropes in mythology, looking at Theros and Ahmonket for examples. I think the depth was misjudged, and that's why they are hesitant to return. Like, the art is fantastic if you happen to have a deep understanding of Shinto mythology, and completely nonsensical to a casual observer. The Shinto themes are extremely well researched and well put together, but back in 2004, coming off of a crowd that is used to more traditional Western fantasy with goblins, merfolk, and dragons, the Kami are just weird. To be fair, the theme is amazing, but a lot of the reason it's so appreciated now and wasn't then can be attributed to the rise of anime and Japanese culture among nerds in general.
